New Interview

Paul Hair, one of the co-authors of Appalling Stories, interviewed me at The Loftus Party:

“By fall of 2018, Obsidian Point will publish the third and last book in my Armageddon series of novels: The Holy Warrior and the Last Angel,” Dave said when I asked him about the trilogy. “This book wraps up an epic tale of angels, demons, psychics, holy relics, occultism, and faith in the face of a Biblical apocalypse.”

And it isn’t like a lot of what you find today. “It goes old-school in the vein of The Exorcist and The Omen, where there’s an objective good and an objective evil, and where people of faith aren’t treated with eye-rolling contempt the way they’re typically portrayed in religious-themed fiction,” Dave said.

All of Your Favorite Superheroes Suck

My latest piece for The Loftus Party discusses nostalgia and how it chokes the culture:

When it comes to past-their-prime franchises, I left out the oldest and most tiresome of all: our current crop of superheroes. Despite minuscule, temporary alterations in powers, relationships, retconned origin stories, outfits, and even gender, these DC/Marvel science fiction genre titans are unchanged. Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Captain America, Daredevil, Thor, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and all the rest have been static for decades.

They get movies and Netflix series and comic books and network shows and they just won’t die and we keep shelling out money to the same people to tell us the same stories over and over again so we can continue to marinate in nostalgia instead of telling today’s stories with heroes and villains born of today’s travails.

I Watched Miss Sloane So You Don’t Have To

Watching Miss Sloane is an exercise in endurance unlike any movie you will ever experience. It’s longer than Robert Altman’s 3-hour epic Short Cuts, the Director’s Cut of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and Andy Warhol’s 320-minute experimental film Sleep put together. I started watching it on Monday morning and the credits didn’t roll until Friday around 3 AM.

At least, it felt that way.

Screw You, I Like It: 1980’s Edition

No form of entertainment is more personal than your taste in music. It’s as unique as a fingerprint and tells an interested observer more about you than the much-vaunted Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (I’m an INTJ, BTW and FYI). But what about those most private parts of your musical taste? Those bands, those tunes that you listen to in secret, too embarrassed to discuss? Who would not be humiliated if one’s secret love of ABBA were to be made public, let alone public on the internet?

You Deserve Better Than Star Dreck

My newest piece for The Loftus Party discusses the two largest science fiction franchises still in business: Star Trek and Star Wars:

The reboot of the Star Trek movie franchise is horrible. Absolutely horrible. The reimagined characters lack the discipline, integrity, and charm of the originals. Nichelle Nichols’ Uhura was brave, beautiful, and competent in a way that made her character realistic. Zoe Saldana’s Uhura is a man in a dress who kicks alien ass and bangs Vulcans. The first reboot film was only watchable because it had Leonard Nimoy in it. The second was an appalling Truther allegory that wasted the potentially frightening character of Khan. And the third, Star Trek Beyond, was incomprehensible, with an antagonist that made no sense in anything he did, a plot that was thinner than truck stop toilet paper, and a series of unfunny joke lines that masqueraded as dialogue.

Review: Goliath

At The Loftus Party, I reviewed the Amazon series Goliath:

The Amazon series Goliath is a riveting show, particularly if you like legal dramas. I don’t. For me, the legal genre ranks just above romantic comedies and right below wisecracking buddy films (Midnight Run excepted, of course). But my wife put it on while I was in the room, so what was I going to do, leave? I had great fun mimicking an English accent and saying, “Just so,” “Cheerio, chaps,” and, “As you say, Mrs. Codswallop,” all throughout her viewing of multiple seasons of Downton Abbey, so I couldn’t deprive her of my disruptive asides.
